Dr. Dostal spent all his leisure time drinking away his fees at the Jelmeks’ pub. His wife was an alcoholic as well. She would have her rum brought in from the Jirans’ pub, which was just across the road, sending over her daughters or son,1 or, if they were un available, patients from her husbands waiting room. Dr. Dostal liked to wear white ducks, which, when drunk, he often sullied.
