My biggest mistake was allowing depression to bully me. My depression became a stressor itself, which triggered more stress hormones, used more energy creating more debt and, subsequently, more depression. I was on the downward spiral and slipping fast. In the end it was only a strong decision on my part that saved the day. I told my friends that, whilst I was very flattered, the company was not for me. I thought the news might really upset them and in retrospect that thought had been my greatest worry.
This is good and bad. The negative by-product is that I get overexcited about things and end up loaded with adrenalin. The physical symptoms this can bring are anxiety, nervousness, (for some people and in extreme cases) panic attacks, negativity, fatalism, conflict avoidance, muscle tension and soreness, the shakes, fine motor problems, headaches, excessive motivation and in some cases Tourette’s syndrome or tics. The amount of energy this gives me is often overwhelming and if not checked and regularly released it clogs my system and makes life very uncomfortable.
It’s hard to lead a cavalry if you think you look silly sitting on a horse. I can see now my greatest enemies in this scenario, and what took me into energy debt. 1) Over-consideration for what others would think of me if I said no (ego). Which in 43 A BOOK FOR THE SERIOUSLY STRESSED turn led to over thinking and 2) poor decision-making. Which leads to bouts of prolonged stress. 3) I set myself an impossible task (trying to cram years of experience into a matter of weeks). I can see now that I allowed myself to be drawn into a position that I knew I wasn’t ready for, because I lacked the maturity and strength to say ‘thanks, but no thanks’.
