But in the next collection, Many Inventions (1893), nearly half the stories involve English settings. England is not prominent in The Day's Work (l898), which is mainly a product of the Vermont years (though 'My Sunday at Home' is a notable exception to this generalization). In the later collections, however, English settings are very frequent. There is a monograph on Kipling's Sussex (1921) by R. Thurston Hopkins. AMERICA Kipling first visited the USA in 1889, when he landed at San Francisco and crossed the continent to New York, en route for England.
